A Divorce He Regrets

Chapter 34

Chapter 34:

My heart twisted painfully, the sight breaking and mending me all at once. They looked like they belonged together, two parts of a whole that had been separated for too long.

Dominic cleared his throat softly. “Ava deserved to know about her.”

I nodded, unable to speak. I didn’t want to wake Liam, not yet. Ava glanced up at me, her innocent eyes filled with curiosity and hope. “Mommy, when can I play with him?”

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. How could I answer that? How could I tell her that I didn’t know when, or even if, they would have the time together they deserved? Instead, Dominic gently lifted her up, taking her in his arms so he could move closer to Liam.

I reached out, my fingers grazing his cheek. His face looked so peaceful, so different from the fear and suffering I’d seen there before. Relief washed over me. Liam wasn’t going to die. Or at least, that was what I hoped. Though it was tempered by a deep-seated anger that simmered just beneath the surface.

“Eliza tried to kill him,” I whispered, my voice thick with fury. “I have proof. But… my phone… I don’t know where it is. It could be back at the hospital where they attacked me, or maybe it’s still in that warehouse.” I gripped the edge of Liam’s bed, steeling myself. I needed to find it. I couldn’t let Eliza get away with this.

I steadied myself, pushing past the ache that radiated through every inch of my body as I forced myself to stand. Each breath felt like fire, but I ignored the pain. Dominic watched me, concern etched in his eyes, but I didn’t waver. I had to know—needed to know—every detail, every clue, every scrap of evidence.

I looked him dead in the eyes, my voice unwavering. “Dominic, I want to know every single detail about the investigation. I can’t just sit here, waiting. I need to find out what they are doing to prove that Eliza was behind this.”

He hesitated, glancing at the door as if searching for the right words, then finally nodded. “All right, Raina. But you need to take it slow. You’re still recovering.”

“I don’t care about that,” I replied, my tone sharper than I intended. “I don’t need rest, Dominic—I need answers. If they think they’re going to keep me in the dark about my own son, they’re wrong. I have to know what’s going on. Every single detail.”

He looked at me carefully, and I could see the admiration mixed with worry in his gaze. Dominic had always known how much I would sacrifice for my children, but even now, he was seeing the depths of what I’d do to protect Liam.

“Fine,” he said… His voice was gentle but resolute. “I’ll get you everything I know. But let me handle the heavy lifting, Raina. You just focus on getting stronger. Alexander said he would handle it, but…”

“Alex?” I cut him off, scoffing. “He’ll cover it all up to protect her. He may not be engaged to her anymore, but I know he won’t want the scandal. He’ll do whatever it takes to shield her, and Liam won’t get justice.”

Dominic shook his head, his eyes hard. “He won’t have the power to protect her this time, even if he wants to. I’ll make sure of it.”

I took a deep breath, the weight of everything settling onto my shoulders. Thank God for Dominic—he was the only person I could truly count on. But the rage in my heart was still burning, and all I could think about was finding that recording. I needed to see Eliza held accountable, to see justice served for my son.

Dominic glanced at his watch, his expression softening. “I’ll take Ava home, and I want to check on Faith too. She’s been worried about you.”

I managed a nod, watching him leave with my daughter. The room grew quiet, the silence wrapping around me like a heavy blanket. I barely had a moment to gather my thoughts before the door swung open, and I looked up to see Alex standing there, his presence filling the room like an unwelcome shadow.
