"Oh crap..." The stonecutter trailed off, just staring at the raw stone like he

couldn't believe his eyes.

Someone in the crowd noticed and yelled, "Hey! What's going on over there? Why'd you stop?"

That got more people curious, and they started whispering.

"Did a gem come out of that stone?"

"Even if it did, stuff from the outer hall never ends up being anything special."

Before I could jump in, the stonecutter snapped out of it and shouted back, "This one is rare!"

"What kind is it?"

"A rare, top-grade sapphire!" he exclaimed excitedly. "In nearly 100 years, only one other like this has appeared, and it was at the Winterbite Pack's last rock betting auction! I've seen the photos. I'm sure it's the same kind!"

People were floored.

Humbert turned to me with disbelief. "Ms. Carson, does your wolf have a nose for gemstones?"

I just smiled and shook my head, patting his shoulder to reassure him.

All the noise caught Preston's attention, and he pushed through the crowd.

When he spotted the gem that had come from my raw stone, he frowned tightly.

I gave him a cocky look.

He probably realized that I had defeated him.

My rare sapphire was worth more than everything he'd dug up combined.

If he wanted to beat me, he'd have to uncover a gem even better than mine.

But the auction had already ended, and all his raw stones were already cracked open. He had no shots left.

Preston stared at me, fury glowing red in his eyes, but I didn't even flinch.

If I weren't still hiding the fact that I was an Alpha, I would've let Hera loose and

made sure he paid for acting like a jerk.

I was grinning and waving at everyone when a loud smack echoed through the air.

I spun around and saw Preston. He showed his wolf fangs and slapped Becky.

"You bitch! Did you give them that raw stone with the rare gem on purpose?!" he yelled, pointing straight at her.

Nobody expected Preston to hit a woman.

Anger burned through me. Hera almost broke loose to tear into him, but I held her back and gave Humbert a quick signal.

Without hesitation, he shifted into his wolf form and stepped in front of Becky to protect her.

"You're just a regular werewolf. How dare you stand against me?!" Preston sneered, jabbing his finger at Humbert.

When I noticed he was about to strike, I stepped right in front of him and fired back, "If you're so amazing, then how come you didn't manage to pick the best sapphire? Are the Hanovers just useless without the help of women?"
