Chapter 1299
"Coming; one second!"
While Lexx got dressed, he thought about it. His house was located in a well-known high-end residential district in Casterwich City. The security was stringent, so in theory, they wouldn't be scammers if they could enter!
He couldn't be so hapless as to be targeted by scammers, could he? Besides, they probably have a death wish impersonating the police!
On his way to open the door, he habitually checked his phone. No unusual calls or texts; no acquaintances contacted him either! F*cking hell!
When he answered the door, there really were two men in police uniforms standing there, looking quite convincing. The two were polite, unlike how they rapped his door earlier; one even took his badge out and showed it to him.
"Sorry to disturb you, Mr. Lopez, but we have something that requires your cooperation. We tried calling several times, but you didn't answer, so we can only come to you..."
Lexx narrowed his eyes as he checked his recent calls.
Seeing a familiar number, the officer pointed at it. "This one, this is our division's office number!"
"Oh..." So, not scammers!
Lexx knocked his head, feeling heavy from the hangover he was suffering, before asking, "What can I help you with?"
"Here's the thing, a young lady feasted in Galaxy Hotel and also bought a lot of luxury goods, but she didn't pay for any of them. So she was sued for beating the check and is suspected of fraud. Because the sum involved is quite large and we can't reach an agreement, well have to file a case. That young lady wouldn't disclose anything, only insisting that you incited her to do so. She had even provided her chat history with you. According to the law, it'd be a significant case if the sum exceeded three hundred thousand dollars. Plus, more than one business is involved, so we'll need you to come with us..."
Hearing that, Lexx had a good idea of what was going on. The scammer from last night! How was she so dead set on him?!
Then again, how stupid was she, already spending the money she didn't have, and even stupid enough to get caught!
"Mr. Lopez?"
Coming back to his senses, he said, "I don't know this woman! You guys can do whatever you want with her!"
After exchanging a glance, the leading officer explained.
"Mr. Lopez, I think you might have mistaken. The young lady insisted that you incited her. If this case is really filed, you'll become the instigator of this incident, and you'll have to come with us then. Well... You're also somebody, and we still can't get to the bottom of this issue; that's why we came, hoping you can come with us and settle it once and for all! If it's a misunderstanding, it's best to solve it quickly. If it isn't, it's still better to confront face to face. If we really have to file this case..."noveldrama
The officer subconsciously frowned as he stopped his words there. It would become a major deal, and not just about anybody could change the course then!
Personally, he didn't want to file it. What was more, her outfit looked expensive, very unlikely a scammer! Generally, things would've been over if they checked their identity, but she didn't have any ID on her, and she wouldn't answer any questions either. Worst of all, their supervisor ran into it and asked that they treat it seriously.
He may have said it out of habit, but they dared not snub it lest he actually meant it, and they'd be doomed if they couldn't give him a satisfactory
answer!
Was that a threat?
F*cking hell, did he break a mirror? He couldn't believe the scammer wouldn't stop screwing with him!
Lexx gnashed his teeth, seething with fury. "I'll go with you guys! Give me a sec; I'm going to get changed!"
After arriving at the police station, apart from his splitting headache, Lexx felt nothing but irritated.
Being led to a room, he immediately saw a woman hugging her knees, tear-stained, hair mussed, on the bed in a corner as the door opened. Their eyes met, but neither said anything as they didn't know each other, having never met before. However, Lexx thought she looked oddly familiar for some reason, but he couldn't remember where for the love of him.
As he sized her up, he noticed the platinum bracelet on her wrist, which he, at least, recognized was from Cartier. "Branded from head to toe; Who did she say she was again? She can't actually be..." he mused.
Right as his doubts arose, the leading officer spoke up, "Hey, didn't you say Mr. Lopez incited you? What, you suddenly don't recognize your boss when he's in front of you now?"
Isla was also sizing Lexx up right then, thinking he was rather good-looking, standing out a little from other men. Right as she wondered who he was and what was he doing here, she sprang out of bed and charged at him, bawling her eyes out, when she heard he was the culprit who made her a fool of herself.
"You liar, liar, why did you lie to me? Why did you go back on your word?"
"I've waited for you the entire night, but they think I'm a swindler who wants to eat and run! Wah..."
"I've only eaten a few thousand dollars..."
"They didn't believe me when I said I had money; they wouldn't take my bracelet when I offered to pay with it either! They tore my check, won't believe me, and even said my clothes are fakes..."
"My phone died; they wouldn't let me charge my phone or call you either..."
"Wah... I stayed an entire night here!"
"They said they are going to sue me and put me behind bars. I've only spent a few thousand dollars. I'm not a swindler; I don't want to go to jail!" Pounding Lexx as she bawled, Islas heart wrenched, thinking she'd have to live penniless the rest of the month when her half a million was torn before she could even cash it in. And with that, her tears fell even more uncontrollably, pulling on Lexx's sleeves as she cried her eyes out. In that instant, Lexx began believing she could genuinely be the second young lady of the Luther family!
Then again, if his memory served him right, the second young lady was very much favored; how did she end up so down and out?
But looking at her right then, he thought she was pretty brainless, cute, but brainless!
He'd take that she was who she said to be for now then!
"I... Why didn't you ask your family to come and pick you up?"
Right as he wanted to say her name, he suddenly remembered she never brought her family up the entire time, so he instinctively diverted and left her name out following that. But he couldn't help questioning either.
Was it that she was worried about embarrassing her family or that she was genuinely a fake when she wouldn't bring it up?
"I was kicked
d out. My dad will kill me
if he finds out! I don't know who... Willy told me to look for you; he even gave me your name card, instructing you to give me half a million every month for a year! He wrote it down himself..."
Her tears still hadn't stopped as she pouted.
"They took all my things away! I've only ordered a few shirts; you said you'd bring me the money! I'm not a swindler; I didn't scam..."
Now that he had a good idea of what happened, he finally believed she wasn't a scammer seeing how brainless she was. However, she did look the part of an affluent young lady who barely had any social experiences.
Thinking things could be dealt with with a few thousand dollars, Lexx said, not wanting any more trouble, "Alright, stop crying! I'll go and settle it, then get you out in a bit!"
Right as he turned, Isla held a deadly grip on his sleeve. "No, no way! What if you run away? I want to follow you!"
She shook her head hard, then took a step forward, hugging him suddenly.
"Take me with you; I'm scared! I don't want to stay here! I'll ask my brother-in-law to give you a raise once I'm out! I'll cling to you until I get to leave!"
Isla held him tightly by the waist, standing midsideway as she kept pressing her body against his.
Suddenly, Lexx felt his heart pounding wildly, beginning to melt.
The officers reflexively lowered their heads and smiled as they watched from aside.
He then stroked her hair as he spoke, a much softer tone this time, "Let go first; have some decency. I'll take your hand, alright?"
Isla shook her head like a rattle at first, but after hearing his latter offer, she released him immediately and held his hand while wiping her tears away with the other, smiling faintly.
She sure was a dumdum!
He was sure of one thing after their conversation; she wasn't the crafty type!
Following that, they went to clarify
the situation and paid the arrears. Seeing that Lexx came to reconcile everyone didn't make things difficult. Later, he escorted Isla out of the police station after taking her belongings.
"Where to? I'll take you there!"
"I have nowhere to go..."
She mumbled as she fished for the name card from her bag, handing it to him.
"Take a look at it; it's my brother-in-law's handwriting, right? He really instructed you to give me five hundred thousand a month! Someone wetted the cheque and ripped it; can you write another one for me?"
Lexx saw Willy's signature the moment he took the card. The symbol was directed to him; it was just some random drawing, but there was a cipher in
it that he and Willy used to communicate important messages.
Guess he didn't need to do any digging now. She was indeed Isla Luther!
But why didn't Willy call or text him? Things wouldn't get to this point if he, at least, let him know about it!
Lexx fiddled with the name card as he wondered, then handed it back to her.
"You said it yourself; he has already
1.n
written you a check. You have no one but yourself to blame for losing it. Oh, by the way, I've helped you pay the 150 thousand dollars so I'll. transfer you the remaining 350 thousand next month before this date! We're businessmen, we follow the code and keep our words. Don't worry, what is yours is yours; not a penny less!"
"That does make sense..."
Isla muttered but then grew worried again, "But what am I going to do now?"
She couldn't shamelessly go to Lauren for help again, could she?
Seeing so, he nearly chuckled, smirking. This girl sure was a dumdum. Then again, she was quite entertaining!
After debating for a long while, Isla looked up, saying, "I'll stay at your place this month then!"
"Excuse me?" Lexx was rendered gobsmacked, exclaiming.
Was she in her right mind?
"It's your fault I ended up like this! I have no food at home and no money; how am I supposed to get by this month? I don't care; you got me in this
situation. You're supporting me this month!"
What do you think?
