Chapter 1301
Isla even shook her arm as she sobbed.
"And this sh*tty Cartier. Platinum my a*s; I've only worn it for two days, and there are already scratches. No wonder they think you're a super fake. I would've been better off wearing two pounds of gold. Jesus Christ..."
Finding her self-pity amusing, Lexx asked, looking at the various shopping bags hanging on her arms, "Why still hold on to it if you're not going to wear them?"
Weren't they all her haul?
He had never seen an affluent young lady like her in his life. She was so poor that she already didn't have money to pay for food, yet she had the mood to shop. No wonder they called her a scoundrel!
Guess this girl was genuinely oblivious to the hardships of life!
"I've already spent the money; I shouldn't just throw them away, should I? At least donate them!"
Hmm, not bad; at least she knew not to waste!
However, Lexx was still exasperated. Should he bother himself with her, or not?
While he deliberated, Isla was already certain he was her best reliance at present. Perhaps it had to do with his unique identity, but she felt inexplicably safe by his side. So deep down, she had decided to seek refuge in him for the time being!
Quite the contrary, Lexx didn't need to think to know that this girl was nothing but trouble!
"Alright, c'mon, let's get your money!"
With that, he turned to hail a cab. The police station wasn't a good place to talk. Plus, he had decided he should just give her a bit more money and send her on her way.
"Okay..."
Isla nodded but said nothing else, taking a gander at his stalwart back, already dead set on sticking to him before she could go home.
She couldn't stay idle and worry about money and food all day, could she?!
When the cab came, Lexx, all gentlemanly, opened the door and even took the shopping bags from her.
Just like that, her good impression of him increased slightly, and Isla went in the car after wiping the tears off her face.
As soon as the car started, she tugged on Lexx, who was in the front passenger seat, leading him to look over his shoulder at her reflexively. "What is it?" "I'm starving! Can we grab some food first?"
Looking at how scruffy she looked, a proverb popped up in his mind. Hares may pull dead lions by the beard!
With that, the first went to a diner and managed to get some breakfast just before they changed the menu.
After experiencing a scare, chaos, and emotional roller coaster, Isla said goodbye to dieting, which had been seared into her mind, right then, downing a breakfast sandwich, a breakfast burrito, a couple of sides, and a cup of hot chocolate.
Lexx, on the other hand, ate with great class despite being a man.
After following Lexx to his place, Isla's good impression of him increased a little more when she saw how tidy it was despite its emptiness, perhaps even neater than her home.
"Have a seat; I'll go and get your money!"noveldrama
In no time, Lexx came out from his room with the setup and the card he usually used. "Are you going to give me your bank account or..."
Looking up to find her gone just as he wanted to ask if she preferred a bank transfer or directly giving her a debit card, he turned around, only to find her already lying on a corner of the couch.
"Hey, you can't sleep here!"
Though he didn't often have visitors, she couldn't just lie there, could she? What would someone think when they suddenly came?
"Here, your money! Wake up!"
"Mm. Quiet down. I'm exhausted. Let me sleep for a while. I'll... leave after that! So sleepy. I didn't... I didn't shut my eyes the whole night!"
"I didn't shut my eyes. I didn't dare to sleep; I couldn't fall asleep. So sleepy..."
Lexx was beyond livid, seeing how she hugged the cushion and kept nestling further into his lightcolored couch despite her scruffiness. This woman, honestly!
"Hey! Hey..." C'mon, at least take a shower before you sleep!
Lexx kicked the couch leg a few times before looking back at her face to find that she had fallen asleep.
Seeing so, he facepalmed, livid, left with no choice but to drape a thin blanket over her.
And from that day on, an unexpected guest lived in his home.
Monday came in the blink of an eye, and as a busy day's schedule ended, Lexx finally was able to continue his rant after they returned to Willy's office from a meeting, not forgetting to arrange Willy's files in the meantime.
"Willy, honestly, I'm this close to going crazy! Please hurry up and get your sister-in-law out of my place..."
"You have no idea; I swear I've never seen a woman like her before! Her brain is a wonder. She didn't even bat an eyelid when she said she wanted to live in my place. Too bad you didn't get to witness how interesting things were when I bailed her out of the police station..."
"Seriously, why didn't you at least let me know that you're giving her so much money in a month? I legitimately thought I encountered a scammer!"
"Who would've thought the second young lady of the Luther family would one day be down and out?"
"I thought she had a rough relationship with Lauren, no?"
"C'mon, Willy, say something. When are you going to take her away? She can't possibly live with me?!"
The thing Willy heard most over the phone and at work in the last two days was probably his so-called 'sister-in-law'. Hearing Lexx's words, he couldn't help shaking his head as he stirred the coffee.
Honestly, the time it took for him to make a couple of cups of coffee and this guy never stopped ranting!
Then again, he never gave him time to answer either!
Just as Willy was about to say, 'I'll leave it to you, call Elijah if it gets too much.' When he turned around, his eyes inadvertently met Lexx's visibly enraptured gaze and lively spirit. It was only then he realized this personal assistant of his seemed to have a lot to talk about these couple of days, quite shrewd right then as well. He knew to sort his files out while ranting.
His reaction... He didn't seem only purely irritated!
He couldn't possibly have feelings for Isla, could he?
Come to think of it, the way Lexx talked about her was a little different.
Moreover, Lexx might usually be busy; he was taciturn as well. When had he ever heard so much gossip, complaints, and talks about a woman from him?
With that, Willy stirred his coffee before taking a sip, changing his mind that instant.
"Isla's a Luther no matter how; consider that if not mine. I know you don't like it, but take care of her for a few days, alright? I'll check with Laurie and see what exactly is up when I go back!"
Then, he turned around and grabbed the other cup of coffee, handing it to Lexx before he continued.
"I'm busy with the wedding lately; it'll
get
be a problem if she keeps finding Laurie or me Make do with it for now, will you? Isla's the second young lady of the Luther family no matter how; Laurie's relationship with her father is still tense at the moment, so Isla's considered his only daughter now. Her father won't stay mad at her for too long. Take it as sacrificing for a friend for a few days, will you?"
Following that, Willy took a couple of glances at Lexx.
"Didn't you say she's hell-bent on sticking to you and won't leave your house? Then don't care about her identity too much! Do whatever you want;
just don't go overboard! If you really can't take it, find a way to kick her out! No need to think about me! I'll pretend I don't know!"
"Alright, I know!"
Letting out a heavy sigh, Lexx knew he could only bear it for now. What to do when his boss was getting married? It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing,
after all.
After successfully living in Lexx's place, Isla was evidently much more at ease.
The brief transition left a major impact on her, and she suddenly realized she had to depend on herself no matter how, or she'd have to beg and live off the streets if anything happened.
Hence, for the first time, she didn't
think to go on a shopping spree after
getting the money from Lexx but
et
took some of it to an asset management company. Of course, she wouldn't say she only put a little in for investment because she didn't have money, but instead, she wanted to test the waters for now
and put more money in later. Even with that, the treatment she got was still not bad.
It was already close to four when Isla was done talking to an agent and signing a contract. On her way back, she came across a kindergarten dismissal, and Yvette popped up in her mind.
Knowing that Yvette studied in a prestigious private kindergarten and she happened to be nearby, she got off the bus a stop earlier, even buying a bag of popcorn on her way there. She also happened to have a nice little plushie in her hand, a gift from the asset management company. With that, she headed to the kindergarten's gates.
"I'm just passing by; I didn't intentionally come and see you..."
As luck would have it, right after she mumbled, she looked up to see Yvette holding a little girl's hand as they walked out of the gates. The patterned bag was very eye-catching against her blue school uniform.
Seeing the two standing there, seemingly talking, and no parents approached them, Isla hesitated for a bit but still slowly walked up to Yvette, thinking she'd drop her gifts and leave. Perfect!
The girls were very sensible, giving way for people passing by but probably because of that, they kept moving further in the walkway on the far-side. Seeing so, Isla quickened her pace.
"Falynn, when is your mommy coming to pick you up?" Yvette chatted with her friend as she shared a lollipop with her. It was evident they were good
friends.
"My mommy had something to do today. She said she'd be ten minutes late and told me to wait by the gates. What about you?"
"I think my daddy is picking me up! He's sometimes in a meeting, or the traffic might be heavy. But it probably won't be later than ten minutes. My mommy said Mr. Forbes would pick me up if they could only come ten minutes later!
But I still like my daddy picking me up. He'll bring me presents every time!"
"Mommy..." Right as they were chatting, Falynn saw a running figure in the distance, and she called out to her, waving Yvette goodbye at the same time.
"My mommy's here. I have to go now, Yvette. See you tomorrow!"
"See you tomorrow!"
Yvette waved her goodbye as well, but right as she put her hand down, a man grabbed her arm.
"Your daddy told me to pick you up. Hurry up, come with me!"
At that, he began dragging Yvette. But upon seeing that he wanted to pick her up, Yvette instinctively stepped back and struggled. "Why didn't you
say the code word if you're here to pick me up? Ring around the Rosie; what's after that?"
"A pocket full of posies, of course! Your daddy, Willy, asked me to pick you up!" Hearing his words, she immediately knew he was a bad guy, but she spotted a familiar figure just as she was about to press the SOS button on her
bag. Isla already noticed something off before Yvette even spoke, dashing over, even deliberately knocking a man's phone on her way before she
shouted.
"Rug rat, I'm here to pick you up! Hey, who are you?"
What do you think?
