The alert had come from the detention room’s security system, but the surveillance footage showed merely seconds of activity. The brief video captured the bodyguards depositing Madisyn on the detention room’s floor. No sooner had they locked the door behind them than Madisyn’s eyes fluttered open.

With deliberate calm, she turned toward the surveillance camera, reached into her pocket, and launched something through the air. In the final frame before darkness, Ailyn caught a glimpse of the projectile—Albertine’s cherished lollipop.

Rage coursed through Ailyn as she checked the timestamp of the destroyed surveillance feed: hours before the earlier alarm.

Nathan whipped the car around, tires squealing against the asphalt as they raced back toward the manor.

Just as they approached the grand entrance gates, a fleet of police cruisers materialized from the darkness, their strobing lights painting the night in harsh blue and red. The piercing beams caught Ailyn and Nathan in their unforgiving glare.

“Miss Vettel, we’ve received reports of unlawful detention on these premises.” The officer who’d given Andrew a ride emerged from his patrol car with purpose, as his fellow officers fanned out in a swift, practiced formation around Ailyn and Nathan.

“Officer, are you seriously accusing me? I’m Ailyn Vettel, the heiress of the Vettel family. How could I possibly detain anyone?” Ailyn’s voice was sharp, her eyes flashing with irritation.

The officer’s gaze hardened. “The person who reported the incident is here. Miss Vettel, do you know him?” He stepped aside, and there, emerging from the shadows, was Andrew. His face was unreadable, but the cold fire in his eyes glowing under the headlights sent a shiver through Ailyn.

“Andrew…” she whispered, disbelief twisting in her chest. Seeing him alive was like a punch to the gut. She had thought he was gone for good.
