Chapter 273
"Pfft!"
In an apartment complex in Crestonia's bustling capital, Ophelia was halfway through her morning routine, toothbrush in one hand and smartphone streaming the latest viral video in the other.
As Eileen's shocking confession echoed from the tiny speakers, Ophelia did a spit-take, mouthwash splattering all over the bathroom mirror. Her boyfriend, just on his way to use the facilities, caught sight of her and asked in confusion, "What's got into you?"
Without even cleaning her mouth, Ophelia shoved past him, darted out the door, and juggled calling her office while frantically scrolling through Twitter reactions.
The revelation that Aurora had betrayed Egbert was like a match to the powder keg of the global inte. But Eileen admitting she was Egbert's wife? That was the explosion that blew the lid off every social media platform worldwide.
Egbert was no ordinary celebrity. He was a nine-time Academy Award-winning actor known worldwide. There were many film festivals and awards, but only nine trophies held real international clout, and Egbert had claimed them all.
The news of "Egbert's wife" went viral in an instant. Fans from all corners of the globe flooded the live streams, and international media outlets switched their headlines to "Shocking: World-renowned actor Egbert's wife makes first appearance under harrowing circumstances!" The clickbait was irresistible.
Meanwhile, in a hotel near Frostsglow Airport... After Eileen's bold statement, silence fell. The rebel leader signaled his men to lower their weapons, and the tension that had been thick in the air began to dissipate.
The live stream continued unabated.
The rebel leader approached Eileen, lifting his heavy gun to point it squarely at her forehead. The cold metal felt threatening, but Eileen looked back at him, her expression unreadable.
The comments were flying:
[Is that really Egbert's wife?]
[How could Egbert marry someone like her?]
[I've searched all the news outlets, and can't find any marriage announcement. Is she really his wife?]
[I think she's not a match for Egbert.]
In the center of the hotel lobby, Eileen, her long hair cascading over her shoulders, met the barrel of the gun with a chilling gaze. "I don't take kindly to threats," she said coldly.
The rebel leader chuckled darkly, pressing the gun harder against her skin. "Where is Egbert?" he demanded.
Eileen replied coolly in Mandarin, "Dancing on your mother's grave."
[What did she just say? Can someone translate?'
[What? Oh my...What did she mean?]
[She just insulted the rebel leader to his face!]
- [Guys, my roommate is from Crestonia, and she told me that Eileen doesn't pull any punches. She also said we should probably delete any negative comments about her unless we want to get roasted.]
The rebel leader, not understanding a word, turned to his men and asked, "What did she say?"
His men were clueless, too.
The Crestonian crew of the show "Romantic Revelations," however, understood perfectly and were stunned by Eileen's audacity.
The rebel leader then looked to Aurora for a translation. With her face swollen from an earlier assault, she begrudgingly translated Eileen's words verbatim.
Aurora shrunk back, silently withdrawing herself. She didn't dare meet Eileen's gaze. There were more than a few people from their hometown here, and if she lied, if she tried to cover for Eileen and got exposed, she'd be done for.
She spoke the truth merely to protect herself.noveldrama
Moreover, it was Eileen who had started it, flinging insults left and right. Actions have consequences, doesn't she dare to face them?
Therefore, on all accounts, Aurora felt no guilt about betraying Eileen. After all, she was just looking out for herself.
Eileen snorted with derision.
Enraged, the rebel leader cocked his gun, his finger tense on the trigger as he bellowed, "You dare insult me!"
Eileen merely glanced at him, her voice frosty with contempt. "You figured that out, did you?"
A loud gunshot echoed through the hall.
Screams filled the air.
Aurora stood frozen, her gaze falling to the smoldering bullet hole in the floor just inches from her feet. The rebel leader had fired a warning shot.
As the reality of the situation hit her, Aurora's legs gave out, and she crumpled to the ground in a clumsy heap.
The rebel leader turned the gun back on Eileen, pressing it to her temple. "You think I won't kill you?" he growled.
Eileen just chuckled softly, her eyes slowly drifting up to the slightly ajar air vent in the corner. From the shadows of the vent peeked the barrel of a gun, trained on the rebel leader's head.
There, in the dim light, she saw Egbert's eyes.
He lurked in the shadows, his deep eyes narrowed into slits, the pistol in his hand - a trophy stripped from some unfortunate rebel's cold grip.
The man was like a harbinger of the Grim Reaper, skulking in the darkness, clutching the keys to hell itself, ready at a moment's notice to cast someone into the abyss.
Eileen's gaze flicked back to the present. Her eyes locked with the rebel leader's, and with a wry smile, she teased, "Kill me? You're welcome to try. Just not sure whether I'll go down faster, or you will."
The rebel leader's face registered shock.
Eileen continued, "As I said, I don't take kindly to threats."
As she spoke, her eyes briefly darted to the wrist of the hand that held the gun.
"Whoosh!" A silent bullet, fired from nowhere, struck.
Blood sprayed suddenly and violently.
"Argh!!!" The rebel leader cried out, clutching his wounded wrist as his rifle clattered to the ground.
In the next second, a slender, pale hand gripped the fallen weapon. With a swift twist of her wrist, she chambered a round, and just like that, the business end of the gun was now inches from the sweating brow of the rebel leader.
Eileen cocked her head, her expression one of faux curiosity as she looked at him and asked, "So, do you enjoy being threatened?"
What do you think?
