Chapter 856 Share a Room
Outside Ruby's room upstairs, Phoebe raised her hand and knocked gently on the door, asking softly, "Ruby, are you still awake?"
After a while, Ruby came to open the door. She had just finished her bath, and her makeup was removed. Her cheeks were even more swollen, looking quite shocking.
Phoebe tilted her head and looked, "Ethan is asleep, right? Let's go downstairs, and I'll get you some ice to put on your face, or it will be more swollen tomorrow."
"Okay."
The two walked downstairs side by side and went to the kitchen. Phoebe had Ruby sit on a high stool to wait for her. She took some ice from the fridge, wrapped it in a towel, and handed it to her, "Put this on your face."
"Thank you." Ruby took it and gently placed it on her face.
Whether it was too cold or her face hurt, she couldn't help but flinch a little.
Phoebe took two cans of beer from the fridge and handed one to her, "Want a drink?"
"Yeah."
Phoebe opened the tab and pushed the opened beer in front of her, then opened one for herself. She clinked her can with Ruby's, "To life."
"To freedom," Ruby said.
The two exchanged a smile. Phoebe suddenly sighed, "Life is really unpredictable. If there were no conflicts of interest, we might never know the true nature of those close to us."
Ruby deeply felt this. She said, "Yes, if even family is like this, what about outsiders?" Phoebe's heart was lightly pricked. She looked at Ruby's slender fingers clutching the towel and asked softly, "Did you just come back from the Adams family?"
A few days ago, the Adams couple made a scene at their house. They definitely wouldn't let it go. Whether by force or deceit, they would try to take Ruby back.
"Yeah."
"The injury on your face?" Phoebe asked hesitantly.
Ruby gave a self-deprecating smile, "They hit me. They wanted me to serve Edmund. I refused, so they forced me. In their eyes, as long as I can make money, even if I become a prostitute, they wouldn't think it's a loss of dignity."
Phoebe frowned slightly, "Don't talk about yourself like that. They can belittle you, but we must be strong and independent."
"Sometimes I really don't understand, is money that important?"
Phoebe sighed lightly, "Money is, of course, important. How many people in this world go to any lengths for money, and how many disregard family for it."
Ruby looked at her, "I thought you would comfort me."
"Comforting you is meaningless. It's more important to make you see reality clearly. Ruby, don't have expectations of them, so you won't get hurt."
"I know." Ruby lowered her head, turning the beer in her hand, "But I still have a little hope for them. I guess I'm too naive."
Phoebe reached out and patted her shoulder without saying anything to comfort her. Adults had a remarkable ability to heal themselves. No matter how broken they felt at night, they managed to pull themselves together by the next day as if nothing had happened.
Ruby looked at her, "Why are you sad?"
Phoebe was stunned. She thought she had hidden her emotions well, but Ruby still noticed. She also gave a self-deprecating smile, "Misjudging people."
"Hm?" Ruby was puzzled.
Phoebe thought for a moment and said, "What do you think of Edward?"
Ruby recalled, "I haven't had much contact with him in recent years, but he seemed like
a gentleman before."
"I thought so too." But she didn't expect he had ulterior motives, scheming against them from so early on, and she only found out now.
Thinking about how Edward had treated her well on the surface while scheming against her behind her back for so many years made her feel cold.

Ruby raised an eyebrow, "You said misjudging people, are you referring to Edward?" Phoebe wasn't used to talking behind people's backs, especially Edward. She tilted her head back and finished her beer in a few gulps, saying, "It's late, let's get some rest."
Ruby watched her crush the can and throw it into the trash, then said to her back, "Phoebe, you and Mr. Reynolds are doing well now. Don't let Edward create a rift between you."noveldrama
Phoebe paused for a moment and walked away without saying a word.
When she reached the second floor, she saw Theodore leaning against her bedroom door, holding a pillow under his arm.
As she got closer, he smelled a faint scent of alcohol on her, "Did you drink downstairs?"
"Had a beer with Ruby. What are you doing here?" Phoebe looked at the pillow under his arm, feeling a bit puzzled.
Theodore said calmly, "Can't you see? I want to sleep with you tonight."
Phoebe rubbed her forehead, "Your arm is still injured, and the kids are restless sleepers. If they accidentally kick your injury, it could make things worse."
"It's fine. I'll sleep next to you. They won't kick me." Theodore said seriously.
"My bed is small. You won't fit. Go back to your room. It's late, don't make a fuss." Theodore stared at her, "Evelyn said your bed is 8 feet. I won't take up much space." Phoebe gritted her teeth, not expecting Evelyn to betray her.
She opened the door to go in, and Theodore's body pressed against hers, his chin resting on her shoulder, his breath light, "Phoebe, what are you afraid of?"
Phoebe stiffened, thinking about the kiss on the Ferris wheel at night, her ears turning slightly red, "I'm not afraid."
"Then let me sleep with you," Theodore said, "With kids here, I won't do anything to you. I just can't sleep without you by my side."

After saying that, she quickly walked in without closing the door.
Theodore followed her in and saw Phoebe going to the walk-in closet to get a change of clothes. He placed his pillow next to hers.
On the large bed, Hubert, Boris, and Noomi were sleeping soundly.
He sat on the edge of the bed, looking at their sprawled sleeping positions, and leaned over to pull the quilt from under their legs, gently covering them.
Phoebe came out and saw this warm scene. She walked over softly and said, "You go to sleep first. I'll take a shower."
Theodore turned his head to look at her, "Okay."
Phoebe walked into the bathroom, and soon the sound of running water came from inside. Theodore got on the bed and stared at Hubert, Boris, and Noomi. Strangely, he didn't feel any aversion towards them. Even though they were Phoebe's children with someone else, he should be jealous and resentful of them. Suddenly, his phone vibrated. Seeing Noomi stir, he quickly picked up the phone and hung up.
However, the caller was persistent and called again.
Theodore glanced at the caller ID, got out of bed, and left the bedroom, leaning against the hallway to answer the call.
Taylor's voice quickly came through. "Theodore, I heard you moved into Phoebe's house. What are you thinking?"
Theodore said calmly, "Didn't you ask her to take care of me for a month? Imperial Apartment and Lakeview Estates are in opposite directions. It's too time-consuming for her to commute every day."
"You are considerate of her." Taylor mocked him.
"I care about myself. Waiting for dinner every night until nine or ten is too much."
Taylor didn't bother to expose him, "Fine, fine. Why am I arguing with you? Have you seen the triplets? What do they look like?"
What do you think?
