I wasn't sure what kind of favor Logan was about to ask, so I stayed silent. He went on, "My parents can't accept Selene at all, especially my mom. Could you say something nice about her to my mom?"

It felt like he was twisting a knife into me. Logan had to be doing this on purpose. If he wasn't out of his mind, then he must have thought I was some kind of pushover who would actually agree to help him. "Mr. Mercer, if you really want me to say something, I can tell you right now-it won't be anything nice." I wasn't about to play the role of a saint.

"Elaine..."

"Logan, I'm not an angel. I can't just be the bigger person here. Selene has nothing to do with me, so why should I say anything nice about her?" I shot back.

Then, Logan immediately asked, "Is it because you're jealous?"

I laughed. "So, this is your way of testing if I'm jealous? Well, let me tell you-you're going to be

disappointed. Not only am I not jealous, but I'm also relieved. Relieved that I saw who you really are early

on."

Logan sighed heavily on the other end of the line. "Elaine, I only gave Selene a title. I owed her that much. But we really didn't..."

I frowned and cut him off coldly. "Whatever happened between you and her has nothing to do with me." "But there's nobody else I can talk to," Logan said, his voice sounding defeated.

It was strange hearing him like this-he had always been so confident, rarely showing vulnerability. But whatever he said didn't matter to me anymore. We were adults, and we had to live with the choices we made.

"Sorry, I'm busy," I said, letting the words linger for a moment before hanging up.

The day went on. I went to the repair shop to pick up my car and then headed over to meet Nora. Ashton hadn't contacted me in the past few days, but I knew he was aware I was spending time with Alice. Maya had messaged me to say that most of the lighting adjustments were done. She added that Ashton had been staying up all night to make sure everything was perfect. It seemed like he was throwing himself into his work to make up for lost time.

I spent the night at Nora's place before heading back home the next day. I didn't run into Ashton at all. A neighbor downstairs asked if I'd gone on a trip with my boyfriend since she hadn't seen either of us lately. That's when it hit me-Ashton hadn't been home at all.

Even though Maya said Ashton was busy, I knew the real reason he wasn't around-it was because of me. When I was there, he came home every day. When I wasn't, he didn't bother.

If he wasn't going to come to me, then I decided I'd go to him.

When I arrived at the amusement park, Maya spotted me right away and ran over. She hugged me tightly before punching me playfully on the shoulder.

"Elaine! You're so heartless! It's been forever since you came to see me."

Her punches actually stung, making it seem like I'd really wronged her.

"I'm here now, aren't I?" I said, patting her back. But my eyes were already on Ashton.

High up on a platform, secured by safety ropes and wearing a helmet, he was performing checks at the

top. Even from that height, he had already noticed me. I waved at him.

He pressed a button beside him, and the platform slowly descended. Turning back to Maya, I smiled. "What's with the long face? Did Mr. Drake give you a hard time again?"

"No, actually, he's been more sensitive lately," Maya said, looking at me thoughtfully. "Elaine, you've changed. You look different."

Her comment caught me off guard. "Different how? Did I get tanned or something? Or do I look worse?" I'd spent the past few days with Alice, enjoying the outdoors-feeling the wind, soaking up the sun, and playing in the river. It had been refreshing.

"No, not worse. You look freer," Maya said with a smile. "More beautiful and attractive, too."

Before I could respond, Ashton had already descended and was walking toward us. His long strides caught my attention.

The way he carried himself in his workwear exuded masculinity. For just a moment, I felt the urge to run up to him, hug him, maybe even steal a kiss.

"Mr. Drake," Maya greeted him formally, breaking me out of my thoughts and stopping me from doing anything impulsive.

"The lights in Zone D, groups three to six, are unstable. Check them and send me the footage from last night's dynamic light test," Ashton said, his tone all business.

I clearly saw Maya pout as she reluctantly shifted her attention back to work. I wanted some time alone with Ashton, so I waved her off.

"I'll let you and Mr. Drake catch up. I'll go check on the lights," Maya said, nodding at Ashton before walking away. She kept glancing back with every few steps, though, as if she didn't want to leave.

With Maya gone, Ashton and I were left standing there in silence. We stared at each other, and the in tensity between us was almost tangible.

"Are you tired?" Ashton finally broke the silence.

"Not really," I replied, feeling the wind on my face as it lifted my hair.noveldrama

I raised a hand to brush my hair aside, and when I looked at Ashton again, his gaze had grown more intense. I noticed his Adam's apple bob slightly.

"Is there something you want to say to me?" I asked, my eyes locking on his.
