Chapter 502
Isadora couldn't help herself—she leaned across the center console and poked Victor's sculpted arm. "Aren't we going home?" she asked.
Victor glanced at her sideways, his gaze unreadable. Instead of answering, he switched hands on the steering wheel and caught one of her restless hands in his own. His warm fingers brushed lightly over her ring finger, their touch gentle but insistent.
"We're making a stop first," he said.
She arched an eyebrow. "Where to?"
"You'll see soon enough."
The Ferrari took a smooth turn, the engine humming as they drove straight down the road until, suddenly, they pulled up in front of City Hall.
When Isadora saw the address, she froze, her mind taking a few long seconds to catch up.
To everyone else, she and Victor were already a married couple-after all, they even had a child. But the truth was, they'd never made it official; they'd never signed a marriage certificate. Isadora had nearly forgotten about it herself.
Victor parked the car and turned to face her, his dark eyes locking onto hers. There was something intense in his look, the kind of depth that made her heart stutter.
Her own eyes were clear and bright, lashes fluttering like butterflies as she blinked at him.
"We're here," Victor said, his deep voice carrying a note of barely concealed nerves.
Isadora twisted her hands together. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely more than a whisper. "I didn't bring any ID."
Victor pressed a button on the dashboard, popping open a hidden compartment. He pulled out their documents, his gaze steady and intent.
"I have everything," he said, his tone low and persuasive.
It was the paperwork Eleanor had mailed over-the ones Isadora had tucked away in a drawer, never thinking Victor would find them.
Victor reached out and gently tilted her chin, turning her face toward him. Their eyes met, and there was an unspoken understanding lingering between them.
"I'm sorry for letting this drag on so long," he murmured. "I wanted it to feel special for you."
She nodded, breath a little unsteady now. Staring up at the bold letters of City Hall, she could feel her heart beating erratically in her chest.
Victor got out of the car, walked around to her side, and opened the passenger door. He held out his elegant hand to her, his voice low and impossibly smooth. "Mrs. Fitzgerald, would you step out?"
Isadora took a deep breath, placed her hand in his, and let him help her out of the
car.
The moment she did, something cold slipped onto her ring finger.
She looked down to see a classic diamond ring gleaming on her hand. It wasn't flashy, but the white diamond-with just a hint of pink-looked expensive, and it fit a little loosely on her finger.
It wasn't the blue sapphire ring from the proposal.
She blinked, looking up at him. "What's this?"
Victor ruffled her hair affectionately. "It's my mother's wedding ring. I promise I'll get you an even better one soon."
Neither of them mentioned the sapphire ring. Victor always seemed to know her heart. He understood that seeing that ring would only remind her of Pudding.
yel.
He'd once given her a sapphire bracelet, and Isadora had looked up its meaning-eternal love. She knew just how rare and valuable a sapphire ring like that was, but because of her own unresolved feelings, Victor had chosen not to put it back on her hand. noveldrama
His dark eyes held hers, intense and unwavering, his grip on her fingers tight as if he was afraid she might pull the ring off. His voice was slightly tense, earnest. "The proposal wasn't perfect, but you said yes. So, Isadora, you're not allowed to change your mind now."
