Chapter 533 Unexpected Confession
Even though Scarlett kept causing a scene, Emily never held it against her.
Emily said everything she needed to say, knowing Scarlett would have to think it over later when she calmed down.
"I never wanted anything from the Smith family. You might not believe me, but I have to say it.
"My divorce from Michael left me with nothing. He chose to give me these things, and I accepted them for the sake of my child. But what you think, only you know best.
"I understand what you said earlier, but I can't comprehend your final actions.
"A mother who feels wronged transfers all her hatred to her children and then lives freely. Do you really feel avenged? You just see the Smith family as too powerful to take down, so you vent all your anger on your children."
Emily's words were calm, but they hit Scarlett hard.
Scarlett was shaking with rage, her lips trembling, but she couldn't utter a single word. How could this be? How could Emily say such things? What right did she have?
Every word Emily said hit the mark, cutting deep. It was a brutal truth.
"Now, you've unjustly burdened Veda with a stigma. She'll be pointed at and whispered about, realizing that her twenty-some years as a Smith family heiress were a lie, that she's just an illegitimate child.
"And your son, he's lost his father, gone through a divorce, and now has to accept that his mother tried to kill his newborn child. They'll both live in pain for the rest of their lives, won't they?"
Emily finished speaking, her brow furrowed slightly, a flicker of pity in her eyes.
Scarlett's face turned pale. She clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug into her palms, but the emotional pain was so intense she couldn't feel the physical pain.
At that moment, she felt an unprecedented sense of helplessness and despair.
Emily's words made her realize that her years of resentment had turned into an obsession, becoming an invisible shackle on her children's lives, one that couldn't be undone or escaped.
Earsynsstrechlinler eyes; Juctoren Ercecra whiter simit, der vorten karser "ay what+ you will, Emily. You're good at brainwashing and hypnotizing. Otherwise, Michael wouldn't be so obsessed with you!"
Emily had said all she needed to. She knew Scarlett couldn't accept it now, and the resentment in her heart was hard to resolve.
So she stepped back, letting Michael handle the situation.
Meanwhile, Daniel had taken Veda to the rooftop.
Veda stood alone at the edge, her eyes empty and lost. The fierce wind whipped through her disheveled hair. Seeing Daniel silent for a long time, she spoke with resignation.
"Why did you bring me here?" After a moment, she added, "You didn't just bring me here to feel the wind, did you?"
Daniel sighed, hesitant. He knew he couldn't reveal the truth about Veda's parentage. It wasn't his place to open that wound.
Unable to find the right words, he tried to ease the awkwardness with small talk, but the situation was dire. Scarlett was about to be taken to the Emerald City police station.
Veda's heart was already shattered. She had no patience for Daniel's chatter. "Daniel, did you bring me here just to say this? I don't have time for small talk!" Veda's anger flared, and she turned to leave.
Daniel had no idea what was happening in the hospital room. Whether Scarlett was denying Veda's parentage or begging Michael to spare her half-sister, he knew one thing: Veda couldn't learn the truth about her origin.
If she did, it could be catastrophic.
With that in mind, Daniel quickly grabbed her arm, his voice firm but tinged with helplessness.
"Veda..."
"Daniel!" Veda was truly desperate.
She came to the hospital with a purpose: to persuade Michael to go easy on Scarlett.
She knew Scarlett had gone too far this time and wouldn't be easily forgiven. But Scarlett was her mother, and if she didn't help now, she might never see her again.
Tears welled up in Veda's eyes, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm begging you, don't joke with me right now. I have important things to do. I'm not the naive girl who used to follow you around! I know you don't like me, and that's fine. I won't bother you anymore!"
With that, Veda's tears flowed freely. She shook off Daniel's hand and turned to leave the rooftop.
Seeing this, Daniel's heart tightened. He stepped forward, grabbing her wrist, and in a moment of hesitation, he dropped to one knee, his eyes full of sincerity and pleading. "Veda! Please, be my girlfriend!"
Veda was stunned, her tears blurring her vision. She looked at Daniel in disbelief, feeling it was absurd.
"Daniel, are you crazy?"
Daniel shook his head, his expression earnest and irrefutable. "Veda, I'm not joking. I'm serious.
"I know this is sudden, and you can't accept it right away. I can give you time to think. I've been considering this for days, ever since we ran into each other at the restaurant. It made me realize my feelings for you.
"I brought you out of the hospital because I knew you couldn't resolve the conflict there. Your sympathy for Scarlett would only trouble Michael. I didn't want you to break down. I think you need someone to lean on, and I'm willing to be that person." Daniel's words reached Veda's ears, but she still found it hard to believe. Wasn't it always Emily that Daniel liked?
She had been so infatuated with Daniel, but he never responded. What now?
Veda's emotions were a whirlwind, tears streaming down her face.
Seeing her silence, Daniel took a deep breath, his gaze unwavering. "Veda, like I said, I can wait."
Hearing this, Veda's heart trembled. She looked down at Daniel's earnest eyes, feeling
a mix of emotions-touched and confused.
She knew Daniel was serious.
At least she wanted to believe it.
But the current family turmoil made her feel like she was being pulled by a thin thread, unable to make a decision. She could only let the tears well up in her eyes.noveldrama
