Chapter 1304
Seeing that her face already turned grim just from looking at some texts, Willy went up and took his phone away, wrapping one arm around her. "How can I? The kids were all wearing the same clothes. The guy just got the wrong person; don't overthink."
Lauren took a step but suddenly stopped again. "No, that's not right..."
From how Lexx reported, things clearly weren't as Willy put it. Then again, he had been playing safety games with Yvette lately, seemingly teaching her to protect herself. She didn't think there was any problem teaching her at such a young age. But looking at things now, Lauren thought it wasn't that simple.
"Willy, you're hiding something from me, aren't you? Who on earth did you offend? Yvette's only three; she can't even express herself clearly sometimes. What vengeance is so dire that they won't even let a toddler off the hook? Yvette's my life. Don't hide anything that has to do with her from me!"
Seeing that she did a one-eighty with her attitude, Willy suddenly sensed some abnormality. "Why do you insist I offended someone?"
"Who else if not you? We were doing completely fine before reuniting with you!"
As she answered intuitively, she exclaimed, "Someone really wants to hurt Yvette!"
"Hey, hey, relax! No one's going to hurt her... It's just preventive measures!"
As Willy hugged her tightly and patted her back to comfort her, his gaze drifted to her newly arm sling- free but still slightly stiff arm, somewhat baffled as a few scattered images flashed across his mind.
Were they targeting him, Lauren, or Yvette?
All these accidents; were they just a coincidence or...
As their eyes met, he suddenly realized he shouldn't keep it from her anymore. Sometimes, two heads were better than one, and he briefly explained what had happened earlier that evening.
"So we still can't be certain as to the situation behind the incident earlier. But these guys sure are brave to constantly make their move during dismissal!"
No matter how prestigious a school got, it would get super busy during dismissals, and no matter how orderly the system was, people would still slip in. Plus, these were all naive children; a single balloon was already enough to lure them if the adults weren't paying attention.
This was also what Willy found most troubling! That was why he'd teach and remind Yvette whenever he was with her. Better safe than sorry, they all say.
"It can't be Kayden, can it? Harm Yvette for the family fortunes? But anyone with the right mind could tell how much Grandpa loves her. If Grandpa finds out he went this far just for the family fortunes, he'd definitely be done for good, much less give him the money he has yet to obtain. Anyone with a brain wouldn't act so idiotically, no?"
"My businesses are all basically legal now. Plus, there hasn't been any major abnormality lately. Even if there were, with the unspoken rules of the business world, no one would lay their hands on an innocent child unless they were out of options or have ocean-deep vengeance."
Then again, he didn't annihilate any companies lately.
Willy was baffled just as well, locking his brows into a tight furrow. Weird! How was it that they couldn't find the person behind all this?! Hopefully, this kidnapper left some clues.
He unconsciously looked up to see Lauren boring into him, and his heart skipped a beat.
"What is it?"
He hadn't done anything wrong, had he? Why the stare?noveldrama
"Cloud!"
Willy's head buzzed for a moment when he heard her name. "Impossible!"
No way it'd be her!
How could she be in the mood for these things when she had just lost Dory?
Lauren's face fell the next second. "So you're saying Yvette's life is not as important as your past love?"
"Laurie, don't get mad just yet, alright? Don't get mad."
Coming back to his senses, he quickly corrected himself.
bel
"I said the wrong thing, alright? What past love? There's no love between me and her we just knew each other longer, that's all! Don't get mad... meant that she had just lost a daughter; she probably wouldn't think of doing such a thing when she's already so sad, no? just thought, to doubt her at this time, isn't it a little, you know..."
Adding insult to injury; very insensitive?
Willy threaded through his words, but Lauren's face was still as grim.
Not waiting for her to say something, he hurriedly proposed.
"How about this? I'll have someone check on her. If it really is her doing, I won't spare her either! Don't get mad just yet! I'll have some of our men stationed at the school gates to keep an eye on Yvette's movements and also assign more people to

Well
have the news write an article. It doesn't matter if there really are kidnappings or trafficking, it'll eventually ward them off. Yvette's my life too! In terms of safety, we'll keep at this from now on. Of course, it'd be great if nothing happens, but it'd be taken care of even if something does happen. What do you say?"
"Sure. I'll personally bring Yvette to and from school from now on!"
No issue regarding their baby girl was too minor.
With that, Willy nodded. "Okay! I'll join you as much as I can!"
And in the following week, Lauren personally brought Yvette to and from school and paid attention to her surroundings. She'd also check with Yvette if she faced any dangers. But it was all calm, no different from the past.
Gradually, even she thought she had been exaggerating, overly worried for nothing. Hence, she slowly relaxed and was no longer importunate. That day, because she had to attend an event, Lauren sorted Yvette's backpack and checked carefully before heading out.
"Be good and listen to your teachers, alright, Yvette? No fighting with other kids. Don't go too far if you don't see Mommy or Daddy at the gates; wait by the gates with your teachers, got it?"
"Got it. You're nagging again, Mommy. You say it so many times that I already have it memorized!" Yvette sneakily felt the Jell-O cup in her bag as she tugged on it, all smiles.
"Oh, you..."
Lauren shook her head, speechless. She couldn't believe she was already beginning to find her long-winded.
Remembering something, Lauren took a necklace out of a drawer and put it around Yvette's neck before shoving it beneath her shirt.
"Your Uncle Daddy got this necklace especially for you. It's very precious; you have to wear it. Don't lose it, don't take it off, and don't show it to anyone. Got it?"
"Why should I wear it if I can't show it to anyone?"
Yvette tucked her neck, feeling the necklace through her shirt, evidently baffled.
"Well... Because no one else has it, and they'll steal yours! You can wear it outside when you're old enough to protect yourself! This is a lucky charm;
it'll keep you safe!"
"Like the ones we saw in church?"
Seeing that Yvette naively found an excuse for her, Lauren hurriedly nodded. "Yeah, you sure are smart!"
Who cared what her baby girl thought it was; so be it that didn't have to explain!
She sometimes thought she was down to her last brain cell when she talked to Yvette!
"Oh, okay! Let's go, Mommy! Can I take more Jell-O cups with me if I behave? I want one more!"
"Sure! Then we won't bring your Bree bag to school tomorrow, okay? Let Mommy wash it for you."
They headed out as they spoke. Never would Lauren have thought the filthy bag she despised would one day save her daughter's life.
What do you think?
