Defying Fate: The Unstoppable Eileen

Chapter 261

After a bit of playful splendor, the kitten leaped to the floor and began frolicking.

Once Eileen stepped inside the house, she picked up the landline and called the TV production crew, asking them to come over and collect the kitten to return it to its owner. The kitten was spotlessly clean and a tad plump, a sure sign it was well-cared for, likely belonging to a neighbor.noveldrama

When the crew arrived to fetch the kitten, they also handed Eileen a new task card.

Reading the card, Eileen paused, "Honeymoon?"

The staff member reminded her, "You'll be departing in three days. You both need to pack as soon as possible to ensure a smooth departure."

With instructions given, the staff member left.

Closing the door behind them, Eileen, holding the card that read "Honeymoon," sat back down on the couch and said to Egbert Reed, "It doesn't say where to."

Egbert was flipping through channels with the remote, he glanced at the card and replied, "We'll find out when it's time."

Eileen shrugged it off and didn't press the matter.

It was still early, and finding herself with some free time, Eileen pulled out her laptop from the drawer beneath the coffee table. Cross-legged, she placed the laptop on her knees, opened her email, and started reviewing company documents.

She had mostly delegated the responsibilities of Nathan Finance to Gentry, but after resolving an issue, he would still send a report to her. Eileen insisted on this; the company was hers after all, and she didn't want to be completely hands-off. She needed to keep tabs on the company's status and the flow of funds periodically.

Seeing Eileen engrossed in her work, Egbert lowered the TV volume and got up to cut some fruit for her.

Eileen, focused on the documents, didn't notice as Egbert leaned over with a fruit fork, spearing pieces of fruit and gently feeding them to her. She accepted the bites, occasionally looking up to see Egbert not paying attention to the TV, but rather engrossed in something on his phone. After finishing the fruit, Egbert stood up to cut more when a sudden "Meow" broke the silence.

Both Egbert and Eileen paused. Eileen looked upstairs to see a familiar kitten standing on the stair landing, tail high, looking down at them authoritatively.

She gasped, "How did it get back in here? And inside the house?"

Eileen's eyes widened, scanning the area. All the doors and windows on the first floor were secure. How did the kitten get in? Did it jump through an upstairs window?

The little kitten darted away, and seconds later, an unpleasant odor wafted down from upstairs.

Eileen and Egbert exchanged a look of dismay.

When they reached the second floor, Eileen saw the kitten sauntering out of Egbert's room. Inside, on his bed, was a small... animal waste. The show's executive director, busy with other matters, returned to find the assistant director frantically contacting people, looking for a dog. Confused, the executive director asked, "Why are we looking for a dog?"

The assistant director dialed another number and offhandedly mentioned, "To catch a kitten."

"A kitten?"

The assistant director pointed to the monitor.

The executive director saw on Egbert and Eileen's surveillance feed an kitten perched atop the highest shelf of the entertainment center, its white paws delicately balancing on the edge, big scared eyes looking down pitifully.

Beneath it, Egbert stood with arms crossed, a steely gaze fixed on the tiny creature.

The scene puzzled the executive director, "Is it a homeless cat that's run into their house? Is Mr. Reed trying to get it down for its own safety, so he's waiting below?"

The assistant director scoffed, "Waiting is one way to put it. More like he's enjoying cornering it, watching it with nowhere to run, relishing in its desperation."

The executive director, still puzzled, asked, "What's Eileen doing?"

The assistant director replied, "Upstairs."

Switching the monitor to the upstairs corridor, the executive director saw Eileen changing the bed linens in Egbert's room. She sprayed some cologne on the bed for good measure and opened the window to air out the room.

The director was at a loss. What was all this about?

Meanwhile, the assistant director had finally borrowed a dog!

Ten minutes later, Egbert was leaning casually against the upstairs banister, watching the kitten being chased by the dog below.

After another five minutes, the dog, worn out, panting with its tongue out, went to Eileen and whined. Eileen had no choice but gave it a bowl of water and patted its big head.

The dog, having quenched its thirst, looked up at her with a goofy smile, suddenly leaping up, placing its paws on Eileen's knees, and attempted to lick her face while wagging its tail furiously.

Egbert watched, his expression unreadable.

At that moment, the kitten that had been hiding under the sofa emerged, leaping into Eileen's arms, meowing plaintively.

Egbert simply closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache begin to form.

Half an hour later, the property management finally contacted the kitten's owner. The owner took the kitten away, and the dog was led away as well, restoring peace to the house.

Egbert sat on the couch, his expression tight as if the world owed him a fortune.

When Eileen finally shut the door behind her, she let out a sigh of relief. She made her way over to Egbert and gave his shoulder a reassuring pat. "I've got your room all cleaned up, no more stink, I promise."

Egbert let out a weary exhale. With a tired but affectionate gesture, he pulled Eileen close and hugged her, broaching a future negotiation, "Look, when we get hitched, if you really want a pet, how about we go with a monkey, huh?"

Eileen just stood there, speechless.

In the control room, the assistant director watched this tender moment unfold on the monitors and shook his head. "Ah, there they go again—always so quick to the cuddling..."

The assistant director's eye twitched with annoyance. Without turning his head, he already knew. As expected, the executive director was totally eating it up, smitten with the scene!

The assistant director felt a surge of frustration, almost wishing he could throttle the executive director right then and there!
